How to Care for Coolmax® Performance Socks (and Prevent Pilling)

DryStep socks are built for action — whether you’re in meetings, on the move, or hitting the gym. Like all premium performance gear, they work best (and last longer) with a little care.

If you’ve ever noticed small fuzz balls forming on the surface of your socks, you’ve seen pilling. It’s common in high-movement areas — especially on technical fabrics like Coolmax® — and it’s totally manageable.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Pilling?

Pilling is when loose fibers on the surface of fabric tangle together into small balls, often in high-friction zones like your ankles, heels, or sock cuff. It’s a natural byproduct of movement — especially when socks rub against shoes, pants, or hard surfaces.

In performance socks made from Coolmax®, nylon, and elastane, light pilling can occasionally appear. It’s not a flaw — it’s just how hard-working materials behave under friction.

Can You Remove Pilling?

Yes — and it’s easy.

Use a Fabric Shaver

A fabric shaver is the quickest way to clean up pilling. Lay your socks flat and gently run the shaver across the fabric. Start with the bottom or cuff area before moving to visible spots.

Try a Razor

No shaver? A clean disposable razor works too. Pull the sock taut over a flat surface and lightly glide the razor in one direction to lift the pills.

This won’t restore the original yarn structure — but it will refresh the look of your socks in seconds.

How to Prevent Pilling on Coolmax® Socks

A few small laundry tweaks can help prevent pilling and keep your socks looking sharp.

1. Turn Them Inside Out

This protects the outer layer and reduces rubbing in the wash.

2. Use a Mesh Laundry Bag

A sock laundry bag reduces fabric-on-fabric friction and keeps your pairs together. (Yes, we’re launching one soon.)

3. Wash Cold, Gentle Cycle

High heat and aggressive washing can wear down technical fibers. Cold water and a gentle spin are best.

4. Skip the Dryer (or Use Low Heat)

Air drying is ideal for Coolmax® socks. If you must tumble dry, choose the lowest heat setting and remove them as soon as they’re dry.

Final Tip

Performance socks — like DryStep — are engineered to move with you all day. A bit of care will keep them looking as good as they feel, even after dozens of wears.

Smart design + smart care = socks that go the distance.
