Fresh socks in a smelly shoe

Your gym socks and work socks go in the wash after every wear, but your runners and boots go straight back on. Each day's sweat soaks into the shoe and stays there. By 7am the next day you're pulling on a fresh pair and stepping back into yesterday's smell.

How bamboo charcoal works

Even clean feet leave sweat in a shoe, and a shoe that stays damp is where the smell starts. In DryStep's shoe deodorisers, we use bamboo charcoal to soak up that moisture overnight. Once it's soaked up, the smell doesn't get a chance to build. We don't add any fragrance to cover it up.

Where to use them

When you take your shoes off at night, put a pouch in each one. They work in sneakers, dress shoes, boots and work shoes. Drop one in your gym bag as well, where your training shoes sit zipped up after a session. Once a month, give the pouches an hour in the sun to recharge them. In the morning, your fresh socks go into a shoe with last night's moisture soaked up.

Questions we get asked

Do charcoal shoe deodorisers work?

Yes. The smell in a shoe builds on the moisture your feet leave in it. Bamboo charcoal soaks that moisture up while the shoes are off. It won't stop your feet sweating, though. During the day, our moisture wicking socks pull that sweat off your skin and dry faster than cotton, bamboo and wool.

How long do they take to get rid of the smell?

It takes a few days to clear a smell that's already set in. Put a pouch in each shoe every night until they come good. After that, one in each shoe overnight keeps them fresh morning after morning. The charcoal does its work while your shoes are off.

Why do my shoes smell?

Bacteria on your feet feed on the sweat trapped in your shoes and give off the smell. Every day a shoe goes back on still damp from yesterday, the smell builds a little more. Soaking that moisture up between wears gives the smell less to build on.

How do you recharge them?

An hour in the sun once a month recharges them. Take the pouches out of your shoes on a sunny day and sit them outside for the hour. They go back in that night. For the rest of the month, they spend each night in your shoes and come out in the morning.

Is charcoal or baking soda better for smelly shoes?

Our bamboo charcoal stays in its pouch and goes back in your shoes every night. Baking soda soaks up moisture too, but it goes in loose or tied up in an old sock and gets tipped out before you wear the shoes the next day.

Can I use them in work boots?

They work in boots and work shoes, along with sneakers and dress shoes. After a shift, put a pouch in each boot when you pull them off and leave it there overnight. Boots that have smelled for a while need a few days before the smell clears.
